WEEK# 9 WRITING APPROACH CONTINUES

 Ms. Quinn gave a task for each group to conduct a mini lesson on the approaches of writing. I was highly amazed at how Amanda was able to grasps everyone's' attention through tracing over three letters of the alphabet to demonstrate the Penmanship Approach. Twinkle with their usual poetry dramatic gifts of the rule-based approach. Bromofoms was perfectly tasked with the strategic approach as Brandon is quite the strategic one. Abier (FABPAK) demonstrated the Multi-modal approach through a video presentation.Finally GALE and our group were to join to present on the Genre approach but GAYLE though it would be best to present on our behalf.In all the class had a good real life understanding of the apraoches to wriitng.

WEEK #10 Creating an environment that help children to write

 PRINT PRINT PRINT  is what I heard the language, Queen Ms. Quinn implanted in my ears all class. I do appreciate the concept as it will help your students to grow as writers. The will definitely be used in my classroom during practicum as it will support children with the skills and strategies that they will be taught, and it will support their spelling and writing fluency. having journal, charts and even examples of descriptive, persuasive, expository and narrative so students will have a pictural view Infront of them is the advice I will carry with me for the rest of this journey. On that note I shall end this blog by this quote "The journey to a thousand miles begins with the first step" I hope everyone take this journey as a beautiful life changing experience that will be destined for us to be athentic and resilent. WEEK#8 -APPROACH TO WRITING

 

This was not my favorite class at all guys however I paid keep attention as I rrealise this topic will be really important during practicum.

Penmanship Approach is the longest standing method use to teach writing to students. It  geared toward generating legible, precise, and artistically shaped letters on the page. Throughout the 20th century, most classrooms continued to teach handwriting, although it received less attention as the curriculum started to emphasize creating unique compositions. The most effective handwriting instruction occurs in short, frequent, and structured lessons. Lessons should last 10-20 minutes each day and focus on writing fluently and automatically rather than on forming perfect letters. Proficient writers possess fluent handwriting skills just like strong readers possess fluent decoding skills. The beauty of this approach is that basiclly imitate what is already traced over and over agiain as as the saying goes practive makes perfect.

Process Approach

This approach is giving me “teach the writer” tease and the reason why I say that students have to pre-wrte,drafting edit,edit edt edit and edit again. The beauty of the Process approach form my understanding in class, treats all writing as a creative act which requires time and positive feedback to be done well. 

Rules based approach

This approach seems so colonial lol! Rules-based instruction involves teaching children to correctly write words and sentences. In sentence combining, children merge two or more short, choppy sentences into one longer, more effective sentence. Practice combining isolated sentences seems to positively impact students' original writing.Some evidence exists that it also positively impacts older elementary students' writing. I donot know if anyone you agree but I am happy we have options.

Genre approach

My first thought when I saw the genre approach as first I thought of music , I am not sure why but I like this approach I really do .I like this approach because it give the opportunity to progressively learn different form of writing like poerty,letters, stories and the list goes on. This approach understands that there is no such thing as a single literacy.

 

Strategy approach

A strategic approach  from what I gathered makes the writing process—including the thinking and processes involved in writing—visible to students. By making the process visible, students have control over it and can use it for their own purposes  and this approach is something I will be using for a very long time as it caters to individuals who are innovative and creative in their  writing. 

Multi modal approach

In my opnion this is the best approach in writing to teach students as it takes into consideration the various learning abilities of students.

WEEK #7 PHILOSOPHY IN THE TEACHING OF WRITIING

 

This class was extremely refreshing and quite short that is definitely not the norm with Ms.Quinn .I never knew they had such a thing called philosophy for  teaching writing and I have been practicing it all along, what about you guys? What was also incredible was her going the through the language approach to writing and I was asking God to send me someone who can show me the light of what I wanted to do for my EDCI Action Research and this was the answer to my prayers.

Nonetheless, an inclass assignment was to be done on creating my own teaching philosophy after watching a YouTube video  and here is what I wrote:

Ms.Ijeh’s Teacher writing philosophy

 

“Education is the key to success in life and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students. These words by Solomon Ortiz connotates that educators it is owr own duty to give students our best as we grow in ourselves as educators .Teach students the writing process of writing .”If we fail to plan we plan to fail.

1.      I will write with my studenst-no man left behind is the chief ornerstone of my class.

 

2.      Students will play an active role their own education. Students will have a choice in the types of books they want to read  and what style they want to write, and how they want to be assessed

3.      We will be a collaboration writing community. Disrespect will not be tolerated towards a students’ writing as students will constantly be reminded that we all are a work in  progress. An Authur’s Chair will be decorated for the students who produced the best work and regular writing workshop style classes will take place to capture each student writing.

4.      Videos, graphics,comics stories, blogs and any other non-traditional text will be considered acceptable forms of writing in my classroom. We will write outside of our comfort zone and experience new things.

5.      Students will be free to ask “why are e doing this?” because I will always an answer. Students will engage in real word problem solving and inquiry through writing assisgnments.

6.      I will stay informed about new teaching practices and strategies I will continuously self assess and revise my work,always  perfecting my craft.”

WEEK SIX -STAGES IN WRITING DEVELOPMENT AND SIX TRAITS IN WRITING

 

When did I learn to write? May be five, not sure It’s hard to remember but one thing I do got from this lesson is that it happened over time. Am seeing a little Psychology in the stages of child development here when am learning  like their bodies, children’s knowledge and skills grow in spurts and stops, as well as sudden peaks and long plateaus.

THE EMERGENT STAGE

·        This stage is based on the spoken language and gives the youngest users the opportunity to tell stories by using the recording function.

·        Parents and teachers should ’translate’ children’s audio recordings into written language by adding text to the adult text field.

·        This gives children valuable insight into the purpose of writing, and shows similarities and differences between spoken and written language

 

THE EARLY  STAGE

·        An early writer should have a core set of high-frequency words, control over beginning letter sound combinations and analyze the placement of sounds in words.

·        Children begin writing problem-solving words they are unsure of writing; they use what they know about spelling by analogy.

·         

TRANSITIONAL STAGE

·        Compose while quickly spelling, and can produce longer, more complex pieces that may include dialogue, graphics, strong leads, and conclusions.

·        Transitional writers should have the following characteristics before moving to the next stage of writing.

FLUENT STAGE

·        Fluent writers understand text structures (compare and contrast, descriptive, problem/solution, time/order, compare/contrast, cause/effect, and procedural).

·        Fluent writers spell most words correctly and carefully edit their spelling while they write. They write on a wide variety of topics including nonfiction and personal experiences.

SIX TRAITS OF WRITING

So the scholar will give a long speech of writing traits ‘being the cognitive and metacognitive

Procedures writers use to control the production of writing’ but om a realty his topic really awoken me and as a science lover I am able to compare language to science at a least a little with the six traits of writing, let me break this down:

1.      Ideas can be compared go the brain and the brain controls the body, body controls the ideas and the ideas controls the writing1deas can be compared go the brain and the brain controls the body, body controls the ideas and the ideas controls the writing.with out ideas writing is impossible. The ideas you choose to include or exclude from your writing determine when and where your writing need to go. 

I deas are strength through facts examples and clear purpose. They are developed when explaination and justification of your  ideas and that of others.

 

 

 

2.    Organization this is like a skeleton -it gives shape to our bodies and holds everything in place  oranisation in writing does the same thing when writing you want to organize your ideas so they are just where m you want them just for they make the biggest impact give a good start by crafting an introduction paragraph that states your main idea and focus then then use purposeful and logical sequencing your ideas and choose smart transition words to link your ideas together.Use a phrase to connect paragraphs then of course your conclusion.

3. Sentence Fluency keeps us moving right along like the our feet  as it allows us to move the way we want to move we can step, lounge, skip, sprint and run that as wanna be good writer  it is important that  I used the sentence ,the same way should take into consideration, we should use writing of different lengths (short, long and in-between)some sentences can even be one word I also learnet that writers should also make sure that writer should make sure their writing does start the same or sound the same highlighting that we need to mix it up , our subject and verb must be agreed upon or it can cause confusion.

4. Word Choice is power like the muscles, practice makes perfect as the saying goes so as we continue to write if we want our writing to be more powerful we must use vivid, strategic words to give whatever being written to life it is not necessary  to use “big word” but it has to sound natural and relatable so the key is to use the right word. There are time we need to keep it simple and write exactly what we need and there are other time where we use figurative language to help to get our point across  and make a connection with the reader

5. Voice think of the heart with this one, literally the heart pumps oxygen and life to all parts of the body and the voice does the same in our writing, figuritivly if someone knows your heart they know tyour true self the voice in your writing should show trues elf. Yes I know its important that is being written should be approprite but the reader must heard your when feel your emotion when reading tour work and this can be done be done using the four(4)  C's: clarity, confidence, convincing and consistency

6. Conventions is writng protection and its like a rib cage to the body. Just like the rib cage protect the other organs in the body,convention constantlu correcting of spelling, capitalisation and puctuation

week #10

Ladies, it has been a wonderful and educational semester. I hope you all enjoy your classes and learn just as much as I did. But as they always say" all good things must come to an end." However, for this class session, we went through each of the writing styles that were discussed in the prior class was fascinating and gave me a clear understanding of each. I hope you appreciated them as much as I did, my fellow group members. We then went further into the 7 board approaches and look at different sorts of strategies within those. The opening video was really educational and beneficial for us who are visual and auditory learners since it emphasizes the significance of the writing process. One of the major intakes I got to utilize in the class session, which has been mentioned a few times in this course as we go through the writing process, is the I do, You do, We do strategy. That strategy is something we should hold tight t and use wisely in the classroom when we go back out. Writing methods for grades K-5 will come in handy when we return to the classroom. We went through each detail and the processes for using them. It highlights the primary techniques that should be used in class. Miss Quinn would refer to this paper as the Bible. It also assists us as instructors in developing our lesson plans. These strategies were quite intriguing, especially knowing that you have a guide to help when children have problems.

 

WEEK #5 STRATEGIES IN WRITING

 

The class commences with the queen herself Ms Quinn doing her thing showing us Comprehensive Writing Instruction

A thorough writing program employs the backbone of the process approach along with explicit teaching in writing process support methods, text structure (i.e., paragraph and genre organization), and writing skills (i.e., writing norms and computer text production) education. She showed us who to structure paragraph using a cat diagram.

 

 Free Writing: Annakay

Students should not worry about writing conventions, genre, format, audience, etc. Teachers should encourage journaling most every day for between 10 minutes and 20 minutes. Students should share their journals as they see fit (e.g., with a friend, family member, teacher). Her demonstration was through handing out journals made of manila paper and allowing students to express themselves.

3. Process Writing Instruction (Chinoir)

A creative writing teacher should provide plenty of opportunity for pupils to build a strong feeling of personal responsibility for their work as part of their mentorship and encouragement program. An substantial amount of writing time and participation in cycles of planning, translating, and reviewing should be characteristics of a process approach to writing training. I used my colleague as a model and we revised the wrting process(pre-writing,drafting,revising,editing,publishing)

WEEK FOUR (4) TRENDS IN WRITING.

 

Children need a block of time to write, from forty-five to sixty minutes daily. They need regular response to their writing from the teacher, peers, and others. They also need a teacher who listens carefully to them and supports them to become a better writer. Teachers need to help children see that they can write about everyday things. Children need teachers who help them build their background knowledge about topics of their choosing. The thinking that goes into writing is invisible so teachers need to demonstrate or model what it takes to be a good writer. Students need teachers who explicitly teach writing skills such as sequencing, spelling, rereading and supporting big ideas with examples. Can use the Gradual Release of Responsibility Framework (GRR) to provide appropriate instruction, moving students towards independence. Students move back and forth between GRR components as they master skills, strategies, and standards.

SOFTWARE PROGRAMMES

Microsoft Word comes installed with two revising tools: Comments and Track Changes. So once students send their work electronically to the teacher, suggestions can be made on students' work. Open "Track Changes" which is located under Tools on Mac computers and Review on PC computers.

USING WIKIS & BLOGS TO CREATE, PUBLISH & DISTRIBUTE WRITING

Wikis and blogs are two examples of online applications to encourage writers to collaborate. Wiki is a web application that allows users to freely add and edit content on the Web. A blog allows the writer to publish and permits readers to post comments in response to the original entry, idea, or question.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Students have the chance to interact with their peers, share personal narratives, and discover their voices through digital storytelling. One of the various software programs available for purchase is frequently already present on the computer. The emphasis is on the storytelling, and technology offers the setting and tools necessary to produce a story with a strong voice and message.
